Suspects arrested during Berea business robbery

The suspects posed as customers as they entered a cellphone shop before attempting to rob the store.

THREE suspects were arrested at a shopping centre in the Berea area on Wednesday, 19 May at 10.30am.  The suspects posed as customers as they entered a cellphone shop before attempting to rob the store. 

Spokesperson for the Durban Central SAPS, Captain Muzi Maphumulo said members from Durban Central SAPS Response Team responded to the attempted robbery at the mall.

“Upon arrival, they confronted three suspects who initially entered the store with a trolley posing as customers,” said Maphumulo.

He said the counter sales clerk, who suspected something was wrong, quickly exited the store and called for a security officer to help.

“The security alerted the police and in a joint swoop, three suspects were arrested and two unlicensed firearms were found in their possession. They were immediately placed under arrest,” said Maphumulo.

“These perpetrators may be linked to other mall and cellphone phone store robberies as the modus operandi is identical to other similar crimes,” he added.

The suspects will be profiled and linked to other crimes, concluded Maphumulo.
