FORTY members of the Palmiet community recently gathered for a development workshop where they were taught how to recycle and protect their environment.

Director of the Overport based NGO, Epic Youth Matters, Michelle Chetty, said they also provided food hampers for some of the members.

“The workshop was hosted to teach people about entrepreneurship and empower them to grow their own food. We taught them how to do small scale farming and provided them with food and hygiene hampers. These included seedlings (cabbage, spinach, chili, green peppers, potatoes and beetroot) to help grow their own food,” said Chetty.

Those in attendance were also taught how to compile a Curriculum Vitae (CV).

“This is all part of the plan to eventually eradicate gender-based violence in the community. You can’t just change your behaviour overnight, there are lots of things that need to happen in communities or among people for them to change. We have to empower people and women to be independent and not to depend on men who abuse them,” said Chetty.

“Teaching people how to look after themselves and become self-sufficient means they become proud and take ownership of what they are doing,” said Chetty.

She said their next workshop will tackle behavioural change for everyone in the community.
