Motor vehicle related crimes spike in Durban, 3 arrested

Officers responded to the scene where they heard noises coming from inside the garage.

A SUSPECT was caught red-handed by Berea SAPS during a Morningside house break-in on Monday.

Captain Poobalan Naidoo, spokesperson for the Berea SAPS, said members received information about a house break-in in progress at 4.30am on Esselmont Avenue on Monday, 10 May.

Naidoo said Warrant Officer Sarkhot and Sergent Nkosi responded to the scene where they heard noises coming from inside the garage.

“They found the garage door slightly opened with a cap jammed between the garage door and the wall, keeping the garage open,” said Naidoo.

According to Naidoo, the suspect put up a fight when he was caught red-handed by the officers.

“Inside was a male suspect who was stealing a bicycle and other contents in the garage. The suspect was arrested at the scene after a struggle. He was found in possession of a filed down screw driver,” he said.

In a separate incident, Durban Central SAPS nabbed two suspects for beaking into vehicles on Friday, 7 May.

Spokesperson for the Durban Central SAPS, Captain Muzi Maphumulo said Durban Central SAPS Field team were following up on information of two suspects who broke into vehicles in the Durban CBD and surrounding areas.

“The suspects where nabbed on Derby Street, where they were found in possession of car breaking implements and stolen items including a laptop with a charger and an iPhone,” said Maphumulo.

He said the suspects were using a blue Toyota Etios Sedan.

“Further incisive investigations led the team to Umgeni Road, where it was established that a Kia Picanto was broken into and the items stolen from it. The complainant positively identified the property which was recovered. Both suspects where detained at Durban Central SAPS,” added Maphumulo.

He urged motorists to be vigilant after an increase in theft out of motor vehicles.

“Of late there has been a spate of motor vehicle related crimes. These perpetrators will be profiled and linked to other similar cases in Durban,” said Maphumulo.
