Students step up to create hope with Walk4Access initiative

The initiative, which started in 2019, aims to create awareness on the cost of tertiary education, the financial exclusion, student accommodation and hunger.

AS part of their Walk4Access initiative, a team of 10 students from the University of Pretoria will start their walk from Durban Girls’ High School to Pietermaritzburg Girls’ High School at 8am tomorrow (4 May).

The initiative, which started in 2019, aims to create awareness on the cost of tertiary education, the financial exclusion, student accommodation and hunger.

Speaking about their previous projects, one of the organisers of the walk, Emmanuel Landman said they walked from Cape Town to Pretoria in 2019 and raised R100 000 in 21 days.

The money assisted 10 students with registration, accommodation and helped provide 5000 meals during the final exams of 2019.

“All we are asking for is R21 for every family for the 2021 academic year. We want to create change and spread hope to students,” said Landman.

Namatai Ruswa (25) from Zimbabwe, who is a Master’s law student at the University of Pretoria, said he chose to join the initiative as it helped him to register this year.

“I am very grateful and I think it is a nice initiative to help other students facing troubles and who wants to chase their dreams and continue with their careers. This is a walk for hope and to assist other students,” said Ruswa.

The walk takes place from 4 to 12 May.
