Boy (11) survives near-drowning incident at Durban Harbour

The boy was treated on scene and then taken to King Edward Hospital for a further assessment.

A bystander has been praised for his quick-thinking and fast response which helped save an 11-year-old boy in a near-drowning incident at the Durban Harbour at around 1.40pm today (26 April). 

According to Emer-G-Med Paramedics and Medical Rescue Unit spokesperson, Kyle Van Reenen they were called to the Wilson Warf area of the Durban Port following a report of a drowning incident.

“On arrival on scene, bystanders were found attending to an 11-year-old boy and Advanced Life Support Practitioners took over his care. Further information revealed that the boy was swimming in the port with his friends when he experienced some difficulty and began to sink. A quick-thinking bystander acted swiftly, retrieving the boy from the water,” said Van Reenen.

He added that the boy was found to be disorientated and placed in the recovery position until paramedics arrived. He was treated on scene and then taken to King Edward Hospital for a further assessment.
