Welding gas shortage halts Durban infrastructure repairs

According to DA councillor, Mzamo Billy, critical service delivery projects have been delayed due to the shortage.

IN a statement released today, 22 April, the Democratic Alliance said much-needed repairs to infrastructure will be delayed by a welding gas shortage in the eThekwini Municipality.

In the statement, DA councillor, Mzamo Billy said welding gas is often used to fix water leaks and major steel pipe bursts or cracks ranging from 100 mm to 900 mm in size.

“The lack of availability of welding gas has a detrimental impact on the supply of water and the repair of major water-related complaints. According to the information that the DA has received, there is a contract in place, however, the service provider is refusing to deliver because of outstanding payments from units within the very same cluster,” Billy allleged.

Billy said the shortage of welding gas has led to delays in critical service delivery projects within the city.

“Just recently the DA exposed the eThekwini municipality’s Water and Sanitation Maintenance store which had empty shelves with absolutely no capacity to efficiently respond and resolve water-related complaints,” claimed Billy.

The Berea Mail reached out to the eThekwini Municipality, but did not receive a comment at the time this article was published.
