Fleeing suspects fire at Umbilo delivery man after robing him at gunpoint

A car chase ensued and shots were fired as the suspects tried to get away from the complainants.

SHOTS were fired when two armed suspects held a delivery driver up at gunpoint on Sydney Road yesterday, Sunday 18 April.

Spokesperson for the Umbilo SAPS, Captain Phumzile Makaula said police are investigating a case of armed robbery after they found two live rounds of 9mm ammunition on Blythswood Road where suspects were fleeing the scene of the botched robbery.

“According to the complainant, he had just arrived to cash in. It is alleged that as he got out of the motor vehicle with the money, he was approached by two suspects. It is alleged that one of the suspects pointed the firearm at him while the other suspect grabbed the money and fled the scene on foot,” she said.

Makaula said a car chase ensued and shots were fired as the suspects tried to get away from the complainants.

“According to the complainants, they gave chase using their car, and shots were fired at them by the suspects. It is alleged that one of the suspects jumped into a house on Blythswood Road. The owner of the house pressed the alarm, a security company arrived and the suspect was arrested,” she said.

Umbilo SAPS were called to the scene where they found the live ammunition.

Makaula confirmed that no one had been injured in the incident.
