Umbilo Task Team nets 3 alleged armed robbers

Police also seized an okapi knife from the suspects.

THREE suspects were arrested by the Umbilo Task Team on Wednesday evening during an operation focusing on armed robberies. 

Captain Phumzile Makaula, the Umbilo SAPS spokesperson said the task team had stopped the suspects’ vehicle, a white Toyota Etios, along Moore Road.

“Some [of the registration] numbers were blocked with paper. On searching the three occupants, the members found, one 7.65 pistol, one magazine, seven 9mm live rounds of ammo, three cellphones that are suspected to be stolen, and one okapi knife,” said Makaula.

The trio, aged between 25 and 30 years, have been charged with possession of unlicensed firearms, possession of illegal ammunition and possession suspected stolen property.

Makaula confirmed that the firearm was reported stolen. A case had been opened at the Durban Central police station. 

“The suspects will be profiled and will be charged accordingly,” she said.
