Skaters vie for King of the Park title

THE Durban Skate Park lit up recently as skaters took to the ramps to compete in the second annual Skate Vision’s King of the Park contest. Durban couple, Leo and Deleah Bourne, who hosted the competition, founded Skate Vision

“We started skate vision in 2017 to support the skateboarders in KZN through our events,” said Leo Bourne.

The King of the Park contest is held annually to foster a fun competitive spirit among local skaters.

“Skaters train to compete for the tile, bragging rights and prizes from our sponsors,” said Bourne.

This year’s competition saw amateur skaters from age seven to 30 competing for the coveted title.

“Our competitions are open to everyone, males and females of any age group. Divisions are based on personal skating skill level and skaters choose to skate one of the three categories.

There is a beginners and advanced category for boys and a new ladies category emerging to cater to the ‘skater girls’ on the scene.

“The ladies category is a new and growing division as more girls join the sport and contests,” explained Bourne.

Winner in the boys beginner category this year was Martin Hahlani (15). Bex Sneddon (28) took first prixe in the ladies category, followed by Carmen Gee (26) in second place and Chantal Graaff (30) in third place. In the advanced boys category, Jamie De villies (20) placed first while Lindelo Mkhize(20)won second place and Ayabonga Khanyase (15) took the third place title.
