Robbers to appear in court for Umbilo armed robbery

The suspects are expected to appear in the Durban Magistrate's Court today.

TWO suspects are expected to appear in the Durban Magistrate’s Court today (12 April) after they were arrested for robbing two women at gunpoint in Umbilo Park.

Police spokesperson in KwaZulu-Natal, Captain Nqobile Gwala, said on Saturday at 7pm, police officers from the Durban Central Task Team received a report of an armed robbery that occurred in the Umbilo area.

“It is alleged that the suspects who were travelling in a vehicle robbed two women of their cellphones at gunpoint in Umbilo Park. Police officers immediately responded to the scene. The suspect’s vehicle was traced and located at the corner of St Georges and Russell Street. Two suspects, aged 27 and 28, were placed under arrest and were positively identified by the victims,” said Gwala.

She added that one of the suspects was found in unlawful possession of a firearm. The stolen cellphones were also recovered from the suspects. The suspects’ vehicle was taken to the police pound for further investigation.

The suspects are expected to appear in the Durban Magistrate’s Court on charges of robbery and unlawful possession of a firearm.
