12 DUT students to appear in court after protest

The students were arrested for public violence, illegal gathering as well as malicious damage to property.

TWELVE students have been arrested by police for participating in the violent protest that took place this morning. 

However, the students who were arrested claim they were not part of protest.

KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson, Captain Nqobile Gwala confirmed the arrests earlier today.

“This morning, at 7am, a group of 500 students embarked on a protest demanding to be registered. They managed to gain access by breaking the gate, damaged the computers and set the university vehicle alight. The fire was stopped by security guards. Public Order Police used a stun grenade to disperse the violent protesters. A total of 12 students were arrested for public violence, illegal gathering as well as malicious damage to property,” said Gwala.  

She said the students are expected to appear in court soon.
