Durban resident appeals for verge to be cleared

Errol Eyden said since a tree fell over onto a verge in December, he has been unable to maintain it.

AN unsightly verge and a fallen tree in Alan Paton Road has raised the ire of a resident who is on a mission to beautify the stretch of land.

Errol Eyden said his aim is to restore the unkempt piece of land, situated outside his employer’s house, to its former glory.

According to Eyden, the neglect of the land started in December after a tree on the verge fell over.

He said he maintained the stretch regularly, however the tree was now hampering this.

The verge before the tree fell.

“The municipality never maintained this verge so I started keeping it clean, and cut the grass every second week. On 11 December a large tree fell down on the verge when I was on holiday. I sent photos of the tree lying on the ground to the Umbilo CPF chair and ward councillor for escalation, and the Parks Department came, however they only cut half of the tree and took it away. The tree was enormous, and a section is still on the ground, which is now overgrown,” he said.

Eyden said only once the remainder of the tree is removed can he get in to clear the verge.

He also expressed concern for any workers maintaining the verge or land nearby, if another tree falls, as they could be injured or killed. He said he hoped other nearby trees could be assessed to ensure their health and stability.

Responding to a query by Berea Mail, eThekwini Municipality said they will get someone to attend to this issue.
