Join trucking coalition

The trucking coalition group is not against trucks but against those that are illegal, that add to crime and social ills in communities, causing property, infrastructure and environmental harm.

SOUTH Durban Community Environmental Alliance (SDCEA) continues to raise concerns around the aberrant trucks that stalk residential roads and community areas.

The SDCEA’s Shanice Firmin said the south Durban communities and surrounding areas to the Port are plagued with bottlenecks, accidents, long queues of trucks waiting to enter the Durban Harbour to pick up or drop off goods and then head back on the road after waiting for approximately five to 10 days in most cases.

Firmin said the obligation needs to be placed on the trucking company owners to ensure that their drivers fit into a well monitored and controlled system to protect the rights of all those directly or indirectly affected by “trucking logistics”.

“Borders are used as holding areas where truck drivers need their release forms signed and this is done at a rate of 100 release forms at a time, therefore, there is a major influx of trucks outside logistic parks and all around the port and back of port areas,” she said.

Firmin said the SDCEA developed a trucking coalition in 2018 and encourages all residents affected by trucking to join the coalition group.

“We highlight that this trucking coalition group is not against trucks but against those that are illegal, those that add to the crime and social ills in our communities, causing property, infrastructure and environmental harm. We fully endorse and support the idea of having the Cato Ridge Dry Port which aims to ensure logistics companies utilise it, and will also move the bulk of goods off our roads and on to rail to bring all goods to Durban Harbour,” she said.
