Potential dog park to be discussed at virtual meeting

This meeting is aimed at getting community input for possible implementation of an assigned dog walking park in the Morningside area..

AN online Morningside community meeting on a potential dog park for those affected by the closure of Jameson Park to dog walkers, will be held on Facebook Live on Saturday, 20 March at 11.45am.

Organised by Councillor Ernest Smith, this meeting is aimed at engaging the community of Ward 27 (Morningside, Essenwood, Stamford Hill, Greyville, Musgrave, Berea) as well as dog walkers who used Jameson Park or Mitchell Park, to get community input for the possible implementation of an assigned dog walking park or space in the Morningside area.

This comes after the announcement in September that residents would no longer be able to walk their dogs in Jameson Park. At the time, Smith said this was not only a slap in the face for the ward residents who lived in the immediate vicinity with their furry friends but also an immense insult to the community as a whole who are already limited with places to take their pets to exercise.

“The meeting on Saturday will address the possibility of alternate parks in the area, will give feedback from a meeting with the Parks Department as well as encourage input from the community in order to give the department a way forward,” he said.

Smith said despite it being level 1, this online meeting via Facebook Live allows greater participation of the community at large while circumventing potential exposure to the Coronavirus.

“I look forward to engaging with the community on the matter as well as allowing the community to participate in such an important issue. Let’s all have our say!” he said.
