Durban commemorates National Water Week

The City appeals to residents to use water sparingly and encourages them to report water leaks immediately.

FROM 15 to 22 March, South Africa marks National Water Week, under the theme “Valuing Water”.

Msawakhe Mayisela, eThekwini Municipality’s spokesperson, said this important week leads up to World Water Day on 22 March and is dedicated to understanding how people value water whether it is economically, socially or culturally and how it plays a role in their lives.

“National Water Week is an annual water campaign that aims at educating the public about their responsibility in water conservation initiatives, raising awareness around the need to protect and conserve water resources. The focus is also about taking action to tackle the global water crisis and achieving Sustainable Development Goal 6: water and sanitation for all by 2030,” he said.

Mayisela said the City appeals to residents to use water sparingly and encourages them to report water leaks immediately to the 24-hour contact centre on 080 311 11 11 or its WhatsApp line number 073 148 3477.

The City offers water-saving tips, as by adopting even one of these suggestions at school, in the workplace and at home you can help to preserve the planet:

•Only flush the toilet when necessary.

•Do not use a lot of water when bathing.

•Put a container under the taps to minimise the waste of water before you go to shower.

•Use a glass/cup and close all taps when brushing teeth, washing hair or shaving.

•Use little soap when washing dishes so that you use little water to rinse.

•Use a container when washing a car instead of using a hosepipe.
