The suspect will remain in police custody while the investigation continues.

THE 21-year-old suspect arrested for the murder of a student in January, is to remain in custody.

Sgt Zanele Khomo from Durban Central SAPS said the man appeared in the Durban Magistrate’s Court on Friday, 12 March for the murder of 19-year-old Sifundo Mhlongo, and was remanded back to police custody for further investigation.

This comes after Mhlongo was fatally stabbed while at a student residence on Yusuf Dadoo Street in Durban on 7 January.

“He sustained a stab wound to the neck and was declared dead at the scene by paramedics. The suspect, who was also a student at the same campus as him, fled the scene after the incident and had been on the run since. A case of murder was opened at Durban Central SAPS for investigation,” said Khomo.
