Informal settlement fire affects hundreds

A fire in the Kennedy Road settlement affected 119 people after 80 homes were burnt.

AT 1am on Friday, 5 March, a fire broke out in the Kennedy Road Settlement, Durban. The fire rapidly spread to adjoining homes, resulting in 80 houses being reduced to ash and rubble.

According to Fernaaz Hussain from Islamic Relief SA, members of the group responded immediately by dispatching emergency teams to conduct rapid assessments at the settlement. The fire began with an electrical fault and affected 119 people directly, of these number 18 children now no longer have a home. Thankfully, no injuries or fatalities were recorded.

“Islamic Relief were the first to respond to the emergency and have thus far distributed 500 sandwiches, 500 bottles of water, 200 mattresses, 250 burgers and 250 cool drinks. We have committed to assisting the community as the need arises,” she said.
