Drug smuggling attempt at Durban court thwarted by police

148 heroin capsules were found inside a cooked chicken.

THE actions of a Durban Central SAPS officer have been commended after she stopped drug capsules being slipped in to the inmates in Durban Magistrate’s Court this morning, 12 March.

Commenting on the incident, Capt Muzi Maphumulo from Durban Central SAPS said at approximately 11.40am, the “W” court was in adjournment when a man identified himself as a family member of one of the awaiting trial suspects who were in custody inside the court grill in W court.

“The court official who was on duty was handed a prepared cooked chicken wrapped in plastic with chips, which was to be handed to the suspect in custody. The Durban Central SAPS member who had been deployed to W court decided to inspect the food parcels, and also cut the chicken into pieces before she could hand it over,” said Maphumulo.

Surprisingly, she discovered something wrapped in plastic, inside the chicken. When she opened the plastic, she found 148 heroin capsules.

“The person who handed over the chicken could not be located after the recovery of the drugs. The member’s courageous behaviour had prevented the drugs from reaching the inmates,” he said. Maphumulo said Durban Central management applauded the member for being alert and cautious.
