Joy as matric results are released

There was relief and excitement as IEB results were released this week.

THERE was relief and joy as matric results were finally released this week, after a long three month wait.

The IEB class of 2020 achieved a pass rate of 98.07 per cent, slightly lower than last year’s pass rate of 98.82 per cent and in National Senior Certificate results, KwaZulu-Natal Province achieved a 77.6 per cent pass rate.
Speaking at the announcement of the results, MEC for Education, Kwazi Mshengu, said from the total number of candidates who sat for the examinations, 104 985 passed, making KwaZulu-Natal the highest province to produce learners who passed Grade 12 in 2020.

Mshengu said this was a class of pioneers who were the first to face head-on the Covid19 pandemic in Grade 12 and to further sit for the National Senior Certificate examination under conditions never been experienced before.
“This is a class that earned the bragging rights for weathering the storm and coming out of it unscathed. The tests, trials and tribulations that they all had to go through bears testimony to the fact that from here they will go very far and remain ready to deal with any challenges that they might encounter along the way,” he said.

Durban Girls’ College learners excelled in the IEB examinations, with learners achieving high results. Speaking to Berea Mail, matriculants said it was exciting to finally get their results after á three month wait. The girls said the past week had been nerve wracking, knowing they would soon hear how they had done, and what made it more rewarding was that they didn’t expect to do as well as they did.
“It was a tough year, but the school was great in supporting us digitally and we had an amazing support structure as a grade,” they said.
Top achiever was Jena Woodroffe who achieved nine As which includes both Advanced Programme English and Mathematics. Gemma Erskine, Nika Govender, Jaime Mower and Kimara Naidoo all achieved eight As.

CURRO Durban’s top three learners were Nirav Doorgapershad with seven distinctions and a 92 per cent average, Mohamed Shah with seven distinctions and a 88 per cent average and Tejal Maharaj with four distinctions and a 80 per cent average.

St Henry’s Marist College’s top three learners were Dux Mpilonhle Nxasana, who achieved an aggregate of 87 per cent and seven distinctions, Hannah de Haas, who was second in the grade and achieved five As and a 84 per cent aggregate and Xian Misra was third overall, with 81 per cent aggregate and six distinctions.

Maris Stella School’s top learner Shriyaa Sooklal achieved eights As, Jessica Cholwich, Sinelihle Mncibi and Jody Ribbink achieved seven As and Hanna Khan got six distinctions.

Durban Girls’ High School’s Dux Vaishnavi Maharajh took top honours for the school. She along with earners Riona Govender, Sanjna Harrylal, Ndumiso Mbatha, Sisanda Mkhwanazi, Kristen Naidoo, Sindiswa Nzimande, Noluthando Nzuza, Saneha Rajoo, Tejal Rajoo, Daksha Moodliar, Tessa Simons and Saadiah Suleman, achieved seven As.

Glenwood High School’s top three learners were Dux, Ryan Wood, who achieved a 91 per cent aggregate and seven As, Declan Munsamy, who achieved a 89 per cent aggregate and 7As and Shiven Reddy, who achieved 88 per cent aggregate and seven distinctions.
