Durban’s Deputy mayor resigns, joins regeneration company

BELINDA Scott, deputy mayor of Durban, eThekwini Municipality, has resigned. 

As of 1 March she will be part of an commercial property regeneration company. 

Scott has served as the deputy mayor of Durban since 2019 under Mayor Mxolisi Kaunda.

Previously she was KwaZulu-Natal MEC of Finance between 2014 and 2019.

During her tenure as MEC, she chaired numerous Portfolio Committees, including the Finance Portfolio Committee in the KZN Provincial Legislature.

Her term coincided with the economic and fiscal challenges brought about by the global recession.

During this period, the Provincial Treasury experienced five consecutive clean audits.

Scott has been a champion for the homeless, particularly vulnerable women and children.

She has led the Safer Cities programme in Durban; has served on the National Housing Forum and went on to serve on the KZN Housing Board.

Her work and advocacy to upgrade informal settlements received national acclaim: Scott was awarded both the Provincial and the National Housing Person of the Year accolades from the then Minister of Housing in 1996.

Scott said she was “hugely excited” about this new chapter in her life. 

“As part of the ANC family I have been able to harness my passion for the betterment of the poor. I have also strived for creating a conducive governing environment that works in partnership with the business sector, academia, and NGO structures, to create sustainable living conditions for all of South Africa’s citizens whilst at the same time attracting both foreign and local investment to ameliorate the numbers of our unemployed,” she said.
