Umbilo author sells book on love to support learners

Proceeds from sales of Richard La Colombe's book, Can I find love again? will go towards schools fees for local children.

UMBILO resident, author and founder of Durban-based NPO Child of Africa, Richard T La Colombe, is hosting a fundraiser during the ‘month of love’ to pay school fees for 20 children.

Richard, who wrote the book Can I find love again? in 2018 and also opened a school in response to the need for additional schooling in Umbilo, said he had noticed following lockdown that there were so many children staying at home as their parents could not afford to send them to school and many children who attended the Child of Africa school could no longer afford to pay fees.

“Through this fundraising initiative I am aiming to support some children by raising funds to cover their school fees. They need to be at school,” he said.

Richard is selling his book, which was featured in Berea Mail in February 2018, at R100.

Richard, who is a relationship and HIV/Aids counsellor, educator, freelance journalist and preacher, said through counselling others in their relationships, he felt he needed to pen a book to give insight to the brokenhearted, hope to wounded ‘soldiers of love’ and to prevent those running into trouble in relationships from losing what is precious, love.

“As a counsellor I always encourage people to work hard at fixing their relationships, it’s not all roses. You need to work at relationships and fix them if you can. If you can’t, you can’t move forward. This book is a true story of people who I have counselled. Marriage is God’s institution and I aim to write and publish a book on marriage next, as I have learnt a lot through my troubles in marriage,” he said.

Richard hopes he will be able to raise funds for 20 children.

The school, Child of Africa Preparatory and Primary School, which opened in May 2019 at 7 Suffolk Place, Umbilo, caters for children aged one to four, as well as Grade R, Grade 1 and Grade 2.
