Suspect shot, injured in shootout with Umbilo SAPS

The suspect was arrested and transported to King Edward Hospital for treatment after being shot by police.

THREE men were arrested for various crimes following an incident in Bartle Road in Umbilo at around 2.15pm on Wednesday (10 February).

According to Capt Pumzile Makaula from Umbilo SAPS, it is alleged members of the Umbilo Task Team were patrolling the area when they noticed a suspicious-looking vehicle, a white VW Polo.

The vehicle was then pulled over with the intention of conducting a stop and search.

“While the vehicle was stopping one of the occupants from the back seat jumped out with a firearm in his right hand. Members chased him towards Fenniscowles Road and he turned around and pointed the firearm at them with the intention of shooting at them,” said Makaula.

One of the officers then pulled out his state service pistol and fired one shot at the suspect, hitting him in the right thigh.

A Z88 pistol with one magazine and 20 rounds of ammunition and a truck signal jammer were recovered at the scene.
