Celebrating women in science

Young women scientists steam ahead into the 4th Industrial Revolution.

TODAY, 11 February, is the International Day of Women and Girls in Science – a resolution of the United Nations General Assembly, and implemented by UNESCO and UN Women.

The day recognises the critical role women and girls play in science and technology and to promote their full and equal access to participation in science.

This vision is shared by STEAM Foundation, a proactive Durban-based, national NPO, funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development, Schmitz Stiftungen and Siemens Stiftung.

The Foundation provides open education resources and materials development for science subjects.

It works closely with PBO CASME (Centre for the Advancement of Science and Mathematics Education) to provide teacher training for mathematics and science educators – together working in under-resourced and rural schools. It just takes one small positive classroom experience to make a difference to a girl deciding on pursuing science as a vocation.

A passionate, skilled teacher makes a huge difference in affirming girl learners and encouraging them to break stereotypes in their choice in careers.

Days like today, when the world brings into attention the need to support women and girls in science, help to change this narrative.
