Cellphone thief arrested in Durban CBD

With assistance from the community, police managed to arrest one of the suspects who pickpocketed a man in the Durban CBD.

ACTING swiftly on a report of a robbery, Durban Central officers arrested a suspect for common robbery in the Durban CBD on 9 February.

Sgt Zanele Khomo from Durban Central SAPS said at around 1pm, a man was approaching a traffic light in the Durban CBD when he was approached by an unknown man who asked him for some coins.

“The complainant told him he did not have money, and then the man demanded he give him his cellphone, which was in the man’s pocket. The man told him that he was not alone, and the complainant then noticed three other men behind him,” said Khomo.

One of the men pickpocketed the complainant, taking his cellphone. The men then all fled.

“The victim stopped police who were patrolling around the area and explained what had happened. He told them in which direction the suspects had fled. With assistance from the community, police managed to arrest one of the suspects who was positively identified by the complainant. Unfortunately, the man with the cellphone was not found,” she said.

The suspect was then charged for common robbery and is expected to appear in Durban Magistrate’s Court tomorrow, 11 February.
