Online stakeholders meeting planned for Denis Hurley Centre

All the usual elements of the Hurley Weekend will be included, but in a different format.

EVERY year, on or near the anniversary of Denis Hurley’s death on 13 February 2004, the Denis Hurley Centre (DHC) hosts its Hurley Weekend.

Director, Raymond Perrier said this is a chance to remember and pray for the Archbishop and also to celebrate and report back on the work of the Centre to its many stakeholders.

“At our 2020 AGM, we were honoured to have SA’s Minister of Health, Dr Zweli Mkhize who spoke fondly of the late Archbishop and of the work that continues in his name. Little did Zweli, or we, know then how much our lives would be turned upside down in the 12 months that followed. Clearly, a face-to-face meeting is out of the question at the moment; so we are planning a virtual Hurley Weekend instead,” said Perrier.

He said all the usual elements will be included, but in a different format.

Most parts will be accessible online via the DHC’s YouTube channel – they can be viewed from 13 February and then any time after that.

There will be a special Hurley Memorial Mass – but not from Emmanuel Cathedral. Instead it is being said at the Oblate School of Theology in Texas by Fr Ron Rolheiser, well-known writer.

“We are also encouraging other churches to include prayers in honour of Denis Hurley that weekend in their streamed services,” he said.

Perrier said prayers at the Hurley shrine in the Cathedral will still take place and will be broadcast.

The main feedback elements will also be available to be viewed online – the annual report from Perrier and short vox pop videos comprising contributions from Trustees, from beneficiaries, from staff and volunteers, from religious leaders, and from patrons, donors and partners.

“Since we are not restricted to Durban, we will have voices from around the country and around the world. There can’t be many AGMs where you can hear homeless people on the same platform as Archbishops, professors and a Constitutional Court judge! And to recognise all the support we have received from artists, and how much support they need at this time, there will be a special artistic element,” he said.

The annual Barry Wood Award for Outstanding Service by a staff member and by a volunteer will also be presented, and two live elements will take place on the morning of Saturday, 13 February: an interview with Perrier on the Michelle Constant show on SAFM and a live Q&A via Zoom. If you would like to participate in the Q&A, email Perrier by Thursday, 11 February to receive the link.
