Man caught stealing R250 000 worth of copper cables on Durban railway line

Durban police received a tip off about a group of men who were stealing cables on the railway line.

A 33-year-old man was arrested after he was caught stealing copper tables on a railway line. 

On Sunday, Durban police received a tip off about a group of men who were on the railway line, on Starling Road Bridge and Sandpiper Bridge, stealing cables.

A joint operation comprising of Montclair SAPS, EThekwini Rapid Response and PRASA (Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa) was put in place.

“The team proceeded to the mentioned place and a suspect was found removing copper cables. The suspect was approached and placed under arrest,” said Captain Nqobile Gwala, KwaZulu-Natal South African Police Service spokesperson.

Police said the estimated street value of the recovered copper cables is R250 000.

The suspect was charged for damaging essential infrastructure.

He is expected to appear in the Durban Magistrate’s Court on Monday.
