Four arrested for robbery following attack of couple in Durban CBD

Capt Muzi Maphumulo from Durban Central SAPS said the men stole cash and three cellphones from the couple.

FOUR men are expected to appear in the Durban Magistrate’s Court tomorrow, 27 January, following an arrest for common robbery on Monday at around 4pm.

According to Capt Muzi Maphumulo from Durban Central SAPS, this comes after a man was walking with his girlfriend along Soldiers way near the Workshop Centre in Durban when a group of around 20 unknown men approached them.

“It is alleged that the suspects had first greeted the couple and asked about drugs, and when the boyfriend had responded in English that they do not sell drugs, the suspects accused the complainant’s companion of dating foreign nationals. The suspects then attacked and assaulted them with fists and kicked them,” said Maphumulo.

He said the men stole cash and three cellphones from the couple.

Police who were in the vicinity responded to the attack and arrested four suspects.

“The stolen items could not be recovered as the other suspects ran away. The arrested suspects are detained in Durban Central until their court appearance,” he said
