Man (18) receives 13 year sentence for stealing cellphone in Durban

"We believe that the conviction will deter other criminals," - Sgt Zanele Khomo

A MAN accused of robbery was sentenced to 13 years imprisonment this month in the Durban Magistrate’s Court.

Commenting on the case, Sgt Zanele Khomo from Durban Central SAPS said on 23 September 2019, the accused, 18-year-old Mlungisi Sithole, robbed a woman of her cellphone.

“Sithole snatched the woman’s phone when she was walking along Monty Naicker Street in Durban CBD. He was arrested by Durban Central police with the assistance of the community immediately after the incident,” she said.

Khomo said Durban Central detectives successfully opposed the accused’s bail, and the efficient gathering of all the necessary evidence including the attendance of the complainant in court by the investigating officer contributed to Sithole’s successful conviction.

It was also discovered that the accused was not a first offender, as he was arrested previously for a similar robbery case.

“Sithole was sentenced to 13 years imprisonment of which five years will be suspended. He was also declared unfit to carry a firearm. We believe that the conviction will deter other criminals,” said Khomo.
