Police highlight importance of wearing face masks

The police and other departments created awareness about wearing masks to curb the spread of Covid-19 in Durban.

A LAW enforcement joint partnership awareness campaign was held from the Durban drive-in site on Tuesday, to create awareness in the community regarding the importance of wearing masks while in public places in order to stop the spread of Covid-19.

The awareness event, which included SAPS members from Durban Central, Point and Berea, Metro Police, Safer Cities, CPFs, the Department of Health and the ward 28 councillor, started with a prayer ceremony, where a moment of silence was observed to remember those who have passed away due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

A motorcade convoy was then conducted throughout the CBD with loud hailing encouraging people to follow Covid-19 safety protocols.

Taxi ranks, Home Affairs offices, post offices, pension pay-outs and busy intersection areas were visited where there were long queues, and people were reminded about keeping social distance and wearing of masks.

The joint partnership between roleplayers aimed to create awareness.

“We appealed to our community to keep social distance and also to wear masks. The public was also warned against prosecution if they continue to be in public without wearing of masks. Covid-19 is a killer disease and we need to protect one another. Approximately 10 000 people were reached through the event,” said Capt Muzi Maphumulo from Durban Central SAPS.
