Two arrested in Durban for unlawful possession of a firearm

When the police searched the men, one of them was found in possession of a 9mm pistol with its serial number filed off.

TWO suspects are expected to appear in the Durban Magistrate’s Court soon on charges of assault with intent to commit grievous bodily harm and possession of an unlicensed firearm. 

According to Colonel Thembeka Mbele from provincial SAPS, on 11 January at around 8pm, Durban Central Crime Prevention officers responded to a complaint of an assault in progress at Warwick Avenue taxi rank and proceeded to the scene.

“Upon the police’s arrival, a description of the suspects was given. When they saw the police, the suspects began to flee. The officers pursued the suspects and managed to apprehend both of them,” said Mbele.

When the police searched the men, one of them was found in possession of a 9mm pistol with its serial number filed off as well as an empty magazine.

“The suspect was further charged for possession of an unlicensed firearm.

“Both suspects were charged with assault with intent to commit grievous bodily harm,” she said.

KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Khombinkosi Jula welcomed the swift arrest of the suspects and the recovery of the unlicensed firearm.
