New year’s bundles of joy welcomed

KwaZulu-Natal welcomed 77 boy and 63 girl babies this New Year's Day.

AFTER a challenging 12 months, South Africa welcomed hundreds of happy, healthy New Year’s babies as 2021 started on Friday.

KwaZulu-Natal welcomed 77 boys and 63 girls. In a statement, KZN MEC for Health, Nomagugu Simelane-Zulu, encouraged new moms to breastfeed, and said the health and well-being of babies is something the KZN Department of Health takes very seriously.

“We urge all new mothers across the province to ensure that they give their babies breastmilk exclusively, at least for the first six months of their lives. We know it is not always possible but they should really try because breastmilk has major health benefits such as strengthening the baby’s immune system. It also creates a strong bond between the mother and the baby.”

At JMH, City Hospital, Durban, proud parents mum Nabeela Van Schalkwyk and dad Jody Koster welcomed a baby boy, Kelden Nabeel Koster at 7.45am.
A baby boy was born at Ahmed Al-Kadi Hospital at 11.57am. There were no New Year’s babies at Netcare Parklands Hospital this year.
