Business licence renewal deadline looms

The eThekwini Municipality warned that inspections would be done after the deadline and those found in contravention would be prosecuted.

THE eThekwini Municipality’s Business Licensing Department has called on all businesses to renew their operating licences by no later than Sunday, 31 January to continue conducting business for the year.

The Municipality’s head of business support, tourism and markets unit, Thulani Nzama, said the licences are valid for a calendar year and the renewal of the licence is critical under Section 15 of the Businesses Regulations in terms of the Business Act 71 of 1991.

“The Act requires that every licence holder, must every year, confirm that the business for which the licence was issued, is continuing to be conducted from the premises specified in the licence. And that no other business for which a licence is required in terms of the Act is being conducted from the same licensed premises,” said Nzama.

Businesses can renew licences via the eThekwini Municipality’s website or at a business licensing office, where the initial trading licence was applied for.

“Industries and traders are urged to start the renewal process while there is still ample time because, after the deadline, licence inspectors, with other law enforcement agencies, will conduct random inspections to all businesses that did not renew to enforce compliance. Those found to be in contravention of the Act will be prosecuted,” said Nzama.

There are no fees applicable for renewal.
