New mural to brighten up Bulwer Park

Umcebo Design has teamed up with students from Unisa and the Glenwood Urban Improvement Precinct (UIP) to paint a mural in Bulwer Park.

AS part of an ongoing project to beautify spaces with murals, Umcebo Design has teamed up with students from Unisa and the Glenwood Urban Improvement Precinct (UIP) to paint a mural on an electrical substation in Bulwer Park.

The project was started in February when Robin Opperman decided to brighten up the alley behind his home with a striking mural.

Unisa student Chantal van Rensburg and Robin Opperman, from Umcebo Design, working on the mural.

Robin said he and his colleague, Ujala Sewpersad set the project in motion.

It started off as them just having fun and being creative.

He decided to paint the wall in the back alley behind his home, and the project grew out of this.

Speaking about the project, Robin, from Umcebo, said the mural in Bulwer Park comes after the UIP saw the murals the group painted in the back alley in Glenwood and approved of the concept of people expressing themselves through art.

UIP manager Vernon Stokes asked the company to work on more public murals in the community.

Robin said Vernon Stokes and assistant manager Kerry Brissett, had put in a lot of time and effort getting permission for the group to paint the mural in Bulwer Park.

He teamed up once again with Andrea Walters, Unisa’s undergraduate co-ordinator for art in KZN, and her student Chantal van Rensburg, along with a community member who wanted to join the project.

“The idea behind this is to show the value of public art.

“Anyone can do it and it helps people feel better about themselves and the environment. Umcebo, like many people in the community, supports the UIP being so active in improving the environment and supporting art,” said Robin.

Commenting on the mural, Vernon said: “The Glenwood UIP has been very active in the precinct with various initiatives such as security patrols, Christmas lights, cleaning and greening, lobbing, weeding and placemaking. As far as the latter is concerned, we are proud and thankful that our placemaking project in partnership with Robin Opperman and associates and the Municipality, in our efforts to restore the substation at the corner of Helen Joseph and Lena Ahrens Roads, is bearing fruit. Adding a mural on the leading wall is the final phase of this project.”
