Alleged vandalism affects residents’ Telkom lines

There would appear to be sabotage of the equipment by workers to get appointments.

ALLEGED sabotage to Telkom infrastructure has been affecting the service delivery in the Glenwood area.

A resident recently reported the Telkom box adjacent to his house in Ormiston Road, Glenwood, had been left unsecured.

He said he had been concerned as with the door open, the electronics for the entire suburb inside the box were exposed to the elements and vandals.

The resident called the Telkom Crime Hotline to report it. The complaint was logged and he was issued a reference number.

He said the following day he noticed two teams of technicians from Telkom and Open Serve arrived to attend to the box.

”I was told by one of the men that it was likely an act of sabotage by employees to get more work and that 70 Telkom poles outside residents’ homes had been tampered with and wires were cut, and needed fixing,” he said.

The resident noted that after the teams left, the door to the box still had not been secured and following another week, he taped it up.

“Another technician arrived and explained to me that the technicians need to pick up a key from the head office and take it back when they are finished. He had a key, and locked the door before he left. I have heard from a lot of residents that their Telkom lines have been affected recently,” he said.

Berea Mail also received a complaint from another resident who had reported that landlines in the Glenwood area had not been working for three weeks.

Commenting on the matter, Guy Perrins from Glenwood Community Watch said: “We have had reports from residents whose service had been affected for more than 10 days. There would appear to be sabotage of the equipment by workers to get appointments, and we have been told by a technician that this is currently happening in the area. It is really affecting people in Glenwood.”

Berea Mail approached Telkom for comment on the matter, however no response had been received at time of going to print.
