R47 million World Cup corruption case back in court

The prosecution team is expected to produce a racketeering certificate.

THE 2010 World Cup corruption case, involving controversial Durban businessman, Thoshan Panday and others, is back in court.

Panday Panday and his co-accused; Mmamonnye Ngobeni, a retired KwaZulu-Natal police commissioner and two former police officers, Ashwin Narainpershad and Navin Madhoe are expected to make their third appearances at the Durban Margistrate’s Court on Thursday.

The matter was adjourned in early November to allow the prosecution team to secure a racketeering certificate from the National Director of Public Prosecutions, Advocate Shamila Batohi.

The case is in connection with allegations of fraud and corruption relating to the KZN Police Services Fifa World Cup accommodation contracts worth around R47 million.

The four stand accused of conspiring to defraud the SAPS by grossly inflating accomodation prices.

There also allegations of bribes and kickbacks that are central to the case.

During the last court appearance, defense lawyers suggested there might be more names and arrests when the racketeering certificate is complete.
