Berea hijacking suspect set to appear in court

With the assistance of a canine, one of the suspects was arrested and charged with carjacking.

POLICE arrested a hijacking suspect following a lengthy search.

It is alleged the 35-year-old man and an accomplice hijacked the victim along Trent Road in Berea on Tuesday (15 December).

After a case was opened at the Berea Police Station, police and a tracking team traced the vehicle to John Dory Drive in Newlands East, said  KZN police spokesperson, Colonel Thembeka Mbele.

“Upon seeing the police officers and the tracking team, the suspects abandoned the hijacked vehicle and fled on foot into the nearby bushes towards Quarry Heights,”  said Mbele.

The area was cordoned off while police, along with the tracking team and a K9 unit searched for the suspects, she added.

With the assistance of the canine, one of the suspects was arrested and charged with carjacking, said Mbele.

He is expected to appear in the Durban Magistrate’s Court on Thursday, 17 December.
