Cause of DUT library fire still unknown

Last week Wednesday, students were evacuated from a burning building following a fire in the server room on the ground floor at ML Sultan campus.

THE cause of the fire that broke out at the Durban University of Technology’s library is still unknown.

Last week Wednesday, students were evacuated from a burning building following a fire in the server room on the ground floor at ML Sultan campus.

In dramatic footage captured by onlookers, students were seen coughing heavily and rushing out of a black smoke-filled building.

Alan Khan, senior director of Corporate Affairs at DUT, said there were no injuries with just one asthmatic student who had to be treated in hospital after inhaling the smoke.

The fire had broken out on the ground floor in the server room, said Khan.

“The cause of the incident remains unconfirmed, as the matter is still under investigation,” said Khan.

“The University, along with the Fire Department, are (…), investigating the cause of the fire. The University is grateful for the quick response from the Fire Department and from our staff and students in the BM Patel Library,” said Khan.

Khan could not comment on what was damaged and the costs thereof.

“The fire was limited to an office on the ground floor. Details of the items that were damaged and the preliminary costs, will only be confirmed once the full investigation has been completed.”
