Dogs stoned to death, Durban SPCA opens case of animal cruelty

Caroline Smith, general manager of Durban and Coast SPCA, said the dogs were stoned with rocks and broken bricks.

WHEN a group of thugs attacked a family of stray pups recently, the Durban and Coast SPCA was called in to assist.

Speaking about the case, Caroline Smith, general manager of Durban and Coast SPCA, said the dogs (mom, dad and their three puppies) were stoned with rocks and broken bricks.

“It’s difficult to understand what drives people to this level of vicious cruelty. Although the adult dogs tried to protect their young, they were no match for the heavy bricks that snapped bones and ripped through flesh,” she said.

As soon as the SPCA received the tip-off from a concerned neighbour, who rescued two of the puppies and brought them to the SPCA for treatment, the SPCA team swung into action.

“Our vet tried desperately to save the pups. And even though we lost them, at least they felt the touch of gentle human hands and some kindness before their injuries claimed them,” she said.

Smith said meanwhile, Inspector Alfred Mntungwa rushed out to the scene where he found the two dying adult dogs, and another puppy which had miraculously escaped unharmed.

“Sadly, the adult dogs had to be humanely euthanased, but Inspector Mntungwa brought the pup back to the SPCA, where she was given a thorough health check, food and shelter, and lots of love and reassurance. Then our adoption team pulled out all the stops to find her a home,” she said.

Now Maze, the name given to the pup, will enjoy her first Christmas safe in the heart of her adoring new family.

“We’ve also opened a case of animal cruelty with the SAPS, because people need to understand that animals’ lives do matter,” said Smith.
