Durban rapper takes on international competition

Born Mandy Mhlongo, the musician is on a mission to inspire and entertain South Africa and the world.

DURBAN rapper Mandy ZuluTrash recently emerged as one of the top artists in the international competition Take Back The Mic.

Mandy said she was also excited to be featured on a billboard in world famous Times Square in New York City.

Born Mandy Mhlongo, the musician is on a mission to inspire and entertain South Africa and the world. Known by her stage name, Mandy ZuluTrash, Mandy is a guitarist and rapper who also hosts events and runs her own small business in tourism.

The stage name ZuluTrash comes from a play on words similar to ‘WhiteTrash’ denoting the constant feeling of being left-out or being different.

“Growing up I was always different. I was adopted at birth so my family life was different. As a young adult I’m always the weird girl playing guitar that says the most awkward things. I realised that being cast out was actually my super power because being unique is a strength, and I hope to inspire others to love themselves too,” she said.

Mandy’s music is a testament of her uniqueness as it infuses guitar sounds blended harmoniously with hard-hitting lyrics to form a sound for hip hop lovers and music lovers around the world. Besides shredding guitar, Mandy has made a name for herself in the industry as a fierce lyricist.

Having performed around the country, she has her eyes on performing throughout Africa. She has shared stages with Okmalumkoolkat, DJ Bongz, DJ Fresh and many more.

The international competition Take Back The Mic is coming to the continent as The Mic: Africa, an eight-episode, 30-minute, multi-platform interactive talent competition and docu-series, which enables fans to curate and amplify the competing artists that they love from six cities across Africa, including Accra in Ghana, Nairobi in Kenya, Mauritius, Lagos in Nigeria, Kigali in Rwanda and Johannesburg/Durban from South Africa.

It will then air in December, which is when the next competitive round begins.

During this time, Mandy has been building her fanbase in the Take Back the Mic app, so by the time the show airs, she will be best positioned to earn the most fan points in the next round and possibly represent the country in the international finale.

In the finale, the top artist from Ghana, Kenya, Mauritius, Nigeria, Rwanda and South Africa will face off to see who is crowned Champion and awarded the Golden Mic.

Help Mandy tell her story alongside two other artists from Johannesburg who have also made it to the show by supporting her in the quest to be the best.
