Musgrave cul-de-sac in a blackout

The streetlights have not been working for over some time now and the municipality has stopped delivering black bags to their area since August.

RESIDENTS at Musgrave Avenue cul-de-sac feel like they have been forgotten.

The streetlights have not been working for over some time now and the municipality has stopped delivering black bags to their area since August.

“I’m wondering if the cul-de-sac does not put them off because it is quite a mission to turn. You have to reverse back up if you have a ginormous delivery van like the refuse people,” said Jeniffer Klausman, a local resident.

Klausman said they have had only two deliveries during this year.

She initially thought the lockdown due to the Covid-19 pandemic was to blame for the lack of delivery but even when restrictions were lifted it was still the same.

“We have to buy our own bags. It is a couple of rands but it’s the principle. We pay rates and we should be getting them,” said Klausman.

Klausman, 75, a retired court typist contemplated whether the city has completely forgotten about this ‘close knit’ community.

Klausman said they have been relying on neighbours putting their yard lights on so the whole street does not go dark at night.

It is almost exactly two years since an Uber driver was gunned down at this cul-de-sac.

The incident is still fresh in the mind of the many residents living on Musgrave Avenue.

Msawakhe Mayisela, eThekwini Municipality spokesperson, thanked Berea Mail for bringing the matter to the city’s attention.

“We are not aware of any issues with the delivery of black bags, however, residents experiencing issues with this are encouraged to contact Durban Solid Waste on 031 311 8841.
The matter has been reported to the relevant Unit for investigation.”
