Seven other beaches in Durban received pilot blue flag status, which means they are on track but have a couple of issues to address, explained Morgan Griffiths, head of Tourism for Blue Flag Project.

They are South Central, Umgababa, Umdloti, Westbrooks, Browns, Ansteys and Brighton.

“This is a major accomplishment for Durban. They have had problems in the past but they have improved their environmental and sewer management troubles which obviously affects the water quality,” said Griffiths.
