Refuse collection to resume in Durban

Piles of uncollected rubbish were left throughout central Durban after Expanded Public Works Programme workers went on a labour strike.

REFUSE collection and street sweeping are set to resume in the Durban central business district after the city reached a deal with its workers. 

Piles of uncollected rubbish were left throughout central Durban after Expanded Public Works Programme workers went on a labour strike.

“Refuse collection and street sweeping services, which were affected by the illegal strike action, have resumed in the CBD. Residents and businesses are requested to be patient while the DSW Unit is clearing the back log. In addition, refuse bags and wheelie bins can be taken out on the normal collection days,” said Msawakhe Mayisela, eThekwini Municipality spokesperson.

“The City would like to apologise to residents and the business community at large for the inconvenience caused,” added Mayisela. 

Ward 33 Councillor, Mmabatho Tembe, said, on Facebook, that Durban Solid Waste has two broken rubbish trucks and are working to recover the backlog from last week.
