#16DaysofActivism: Join the fight against GBV

The 16 Days of Activism is an annual international campaign that kicks off on 25 November, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, and runs until 10 December.

GENDER-BASED violence (GBV) remains a major concern for South African citizens, as revealed by the second quarterly crime statistics released by Minister of Police Bheki Cele earlier this month.

As such citizens have been encouraged to take a stand against GBV during the annual 16 Days of Activism campaign, which kicks off today (25 November).

According to Cele, over 8 900 people were raped during July and August alone.

The majority of the incidents were reported in KwaZulu-Natal.

“Crimes against our women and children should be rooted out, and this 16 days campaign certainly has value in again focusing our attention on efforts in this regard. We can do this by following basic safety tips and making sure we share these tips with our loved ones, and talk about safe personal habits throughout the year,” said Charnel Hattingh, head of marketing and communications at Fidelity ADT.

The 16 Days of Activism is an annual international campaign that kicks off on 25 November, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, and runs until 10 December, Human Rights Day.

It was started by activists at the inaugural Women’s Global Leadership Institute in 1991 and continues to be coordinated each year by the Center for Women’s Global Leadership.

It is used as an organising strategy by individuals and organisations around the world to call for the prevention and elimination of violence against women and girls.
