Former banker follows passion for radio

Koekie Nkwanyana said although she is a businesswoman, people always told her she should do radio, something she never thought she would accomplish.

A FORMER banker has followed her dream to tick something else off her bucket list by joining the DYR (formerly Durban Youth Radio) team this year.

Koekie Nkwanyana was a banker for 11 years, and started her own business while working. She said although she is a businesswoman, people always told her she should do radio, something she never thought she would accomplish.

“I never thought I could do radio, but at the end of February I went to DYR to promote an event and the host, Lifa Kgake, asked if I had ever done radio before. He said I should go back the following Monday to do the traffic. I was so excited as it was on my bucket list to do radio, and here was my opportunity. I love it!” she said.

Koekie said since she started she has had compliments from the community, and even from people in the UK and Germany who stream the station.

“I’ve been a motorist for 10 years and it is easy for me to navigate the streets and give alternate routes to our listeners as I am from Durban,” she said.

Koekie said being at the station she has been able to do more MC gigs and get out there, as well motivate for people to carry on with their own businesses.
“I also run my own logistics company so this is something I do as a passion. This is ‘my time’, my three hours in the day to do something for me, that I love. I am also so motivated and inspired by the people around me at the station,” she said.

Commenting on her future in radio, Koekie said she would love to be on Metro FM one day.
“I am aiming big, but I am loving it here, where I can grow. There should be more stations like DYR,” she said.
