Collect your pets from SPCA

On Monday the SPCA collected 24 dogs and 13 stray cats.

THE Durban and Coast SPCA is appealing to pet owners to claim their pets, following a weekend of fireworks and storms in the Durban area.

Tanya Fleischer, marketing manager of the Durban and Coast SPCA, said from 13 to 15 November, there were eight dogs taken to the SPCA as strays.
She said the Inspectorate collected three strays at the weekend. “One of these was a dead dog on arrival, we suspect he got scared and ran and was hit by a car.
Our Inspectorate received many calls but luckily most of the calls were cancelled as owners were found,” she said.

Fleischer said, however, that it was generally the aftermath that they felt more than the weekend itself.

“On Monday we collected 24 dogs and 13 stray cats, possibly people were trying to find their owners first and called us a day or so later. This is almost double the calls we usually receive to collect strays. We also received 18 lost reports, of which three dogs have been owner claimed. Sadly two of these three have been injured from fireworks and their owners will need to take them to further treatment as well as X-rays,” she said.

She said more people have come through to search for their pets this year compared to previous years, which is why the SPCA has to once again stress the importance of microchipping your pet.
“We will be seeing more animals coming through over the next few days,” she said.
