KZN Deputy Speaker to receive state funeral

The former ANC councillor will receive a state funeral after the president's approval.

FORMER KwaZulu-Natal Legislature Deputy Speaker, Mluleki Ndobe, will receive a state funeral following the president’s approval. 

Ndobe, 46, died in an alleged suicide last week at his Umbilo home.

His wife found him with a gunshot wound to his chest. 

He was reported to have struggled with cancer in recent months.

An inquest docket was open at Umbilo police station. 

Ndobe, a former two-term mayor of the Harry Gwala District Municipality, will be granted an official provincial funeral, category two following President Cyril Ramaphosa’s approval.  

This category of funerals is for, “distinguished persons specifically designated by the President of South Africa on request by the Premier of a province.”

Sihle Zikalala, KZN Premier, said the state funeral was in recognition of Ndobe’s long commitment to public service. 

“We are very pleased to welcome the decision of the President to honour Deputy Speaker Ndobe in this manner as he passed away while in office having served the community and people of South Africa virtually all his life. This is indeed a fitting tribute to this gentle giant, humble servant and liberation activist of our people,” he said.

Ndobe will be laid to rest on Saturday in his hometown of Umzimkhulu.
