Durban robbery suspects in custody

On Tuesday afternoon, a couple was standing outside the gate of their premises on Peter Mokaba Road in Overport when they were accosted by unknown gunmen.

THREE men are in police custody at Durban Central SAPS, facing charges of armed robbery, possession of suspected stolen property and possession of a firearm.

Commenting on the case, provincial SAPS spokesperson, Col Thembeka Mbele, said it is alleged that on Tuesday afternoon, a couple was standing outside the gate of their premises on Peter Mokaba Road in Overport when they were accosted by unknown gunmen who demanded their cellphones.

They then took the cellphones and fled in their getaway vehicle. A case of armed robbery was opened at the Berea police station for investigation.

“Police officers from the Durban Central Field Unit received information about a vehicle at St George’s in the Durban CBD, fitting the description of the suspects’ getaway vehicle and proceeded to the area. On arrival, they found three men inside a shop who were trying to sell the two cellphones that were stolen from the victims. The suspects were immediately arrested,” she said.

The cellphones were recovered and their getaway vehicle was seized for further investigation. While police were searching the vehicle, a firearm with ammunition was recovered.  

The men are expected to appear in the Durban Magistrate’s Court soon.
