Volunteers needed to ‘shake a can’ on Poppy Day
The South African Legion provides assistance to all former servicemen and women and their families in dire straits.
THE public is encouraged to sign up as volunteers with The South African Legion on Poppy Day, Saturday, 7 November.
The South African Legion provides assistance to all former servicemen and women and their families in dire straits, and depends entirely on donations to carry out its welfare work. The organisation is granted only one Saturday each year for street collections. The more collectors, the greater the income.
If the public could volunteer an hour or so of their time that day to ‘shake a can’ at a shopping centre/mall close to where they live, the Legion would be able to offer more to those in need.

This is one of the Legion’s main functions and goes a long way towards satisfying their motto: “Not for Ourselves but for Others”.
Volunteers will not only collect funds, but will raise awareness for the Legion and the work it does in the community. People in the community can offer to collect at Avonmore Spar, Bluff Hillside Market, Glenwood Village, Musgrave Centre, Queensburgh Shopping Centre, Queensmead Mall, Southway Mall and Windermere Shopping Centre. Covid-19 regulations will be followed, and volunteers will wear masks while collecting.
