Happy ending to theft story

John Makhanya, a well-known gardener in the Umbilo and Glenmore area, was held up by two armed men, who stole his brush cutter, when he was on his way to a job on Wednesday, 30 September.

A RECENT appeal in Berea Mail for donations for a local gardener to replace a stolen brush cutter had a happy ending.

John Makhanya, a well-known gardener in the Umbilo and Glenmore area, was held up by two armed men, who stole his brush cutter, when he was on his way to a job on Wednesday, 30 September. John’s only option was to use an old brush cutter, which broke up to four times during a job.

The appeal was for donations so John could save up to buy another, more reliable brush cutter to do his work, however he got more than he bargained for!
Jenna Robinson, marketing manager from Husqvarna in Pietermaritzburg, responded to the appeal by offering John a demo model petrol brush cutter.

“I came across the article on Facebook, and it really touched my heart,” she said. Jenna responded by contacting Justine Horn, on whose property John lives.

Justine and Jenna organised to meet up on Friday at the KZNSA so Justine could take the brush cutter home to John.

“John said to me that I had to tell Jenna ‘thanks very much, I am a lucky man, God bless you’,” Justine said.

When Justine arrived home with the brush cutter in her car, John was so taken aback by the donation, that he was at a loss for words. He was shocked that he had been given such a big, expensive machine, and was very happy to have received it.

“Husqvarna has said they will maintain the brush cutter as well, which is great. We are so happy with the response to the appeal, and John also received cash donations and offers of work,” said Justine.
