Nappies for Durban homeless mothers

The Nappy Bag initiative was started by Durban resident Dr Devarshni Reddy and her friend Bhavna Singh.

THE Nappy Bag Initiative is helping poor mothers with essentials for their children.

The initiative was started by Durban resident Dr Devarshni Reddy and her friend Bhavna Singh. “I have two kids and when I had them I got six baby bags (from different organisations) and that’s when the idea came about,” said Reddy. “I reached out to people on Facebook and asked if they had extra bags and the response was amazing, we were able to give away 100 bags in the first month (April).”

Reddy said they had initially wanted to donate the bags to new mothers at hospitals but with the Covid-19 pandemic it was difficult to gain access to the mothers.

“So eventually we settled on places where there are abandoned babies, baby safes and homeless shelters,” said Reddy.

One of the homeless shelters is Strollers Building, which houses predominantly women and children. Reddy got in touch with wife and husband duo Stephanie and Hoosen Amod, who run the El Gibbor soup kitchen that donates food hampers to a number of places across the city. Stephanie had told Reddy there were a number of single mothers at Strollers in need of baby toiletries.

“Only when you have experienced being homeless, an addict and going through hardship then you will understand what it is to want help and be in need,” said Hoosen. “We have been there and we know how difficult it is to get help.”
